The 60 year old Service Ontario Employee is not going in for his hockey exploits a quarter century in local men leagues won quite get you there but for a poem he wrote on one of hockey icons, Wayne Gretzky.The poem, He Will Always be The Great One, will be displayed as a five foot high banner starting this week in a new display about Gretzky at the local hall of fame at the Invista Centre. Daily and admission is free.Also going in the Gretzky display is his hockey jersey from the first year he played in Edmonton, 1978 79 when the Oilers were in the World Hockey Association, photos, the program Oakley poem is in, as well as other Gretzky artifacts.Oakley wrote the poem about Gretzky 15 years ago, around the time that The Great One was retiring from a 20 year National Hockey League career.Gretzky scored 894 career goals and 2,857 points from 1979 80 to 1998 99, records that may never be broken.Oakley, who has written two books about the outdoors and hunting and is a regular contributor to the Whig Standard, was so inspired by Gretzky it caused him to pen the poem. He had never written a poem before and hasn since.”I wrote it on my backyard deck,” said Oakley at the Invista Centre this week.
