The discussion centred upon the creation of “transport hubs” in south Cambridgeshire which would allow people from less well connected villages to ride to designated spots to transfer to public transport.Would Cambridge cyclists lives be saved by this simple rule change?Cllr Bridget Smith said the idea would help connect people and would drive the “modal shift” from cars to bikes and public transport that the City Deal was trying to effect.Cllr Smith said: “There’s a huge opportunity here for a change, and this is exactly the kind of thing that will drive the elusive modal shift.”It’s not something we’ve talked a lot about, but there is a huge demand from people in south Cambridgeshire.”Call for private companies to help with costs of improving cycling infrastructureCllr Francis Burkitt, vice chairman of the City Deal board, said he generally agreed with the idea of having widespread “transport hubs” in the region, but noted that there was less support for the idea in the villages and communities they were intended to serve.
