But it is doubtful if Fergie felt any worse than today at St Mary’s where Southampton inflicted United’s first Premiership defeat since St Stephen’s Day courtesy of Beattie’s close range header two minutes from time.United’s new American goalkeeper Tim Howard had to take the blame for letting a Graeme Le Saux corner sail over his head and give Beattie a goal on a plate. The striker, who nearly won the Golden Boot last season with 23 goals, does not miss opportunities like that.Fergie’s fury was plain to see even though it looked as if his side might escape and finish blank in a fixture which has produced no fewer than 80 goals in the last 22 meetings.Nobody could begrudge Southampton, who had drawn all their three earlier fixtures this season, celebrating their first win. They had already taken off new striker Kevin Phillips who had spurned two chances to give them the victory but Beattie came up trumps in the end.Ferguson had to field a side shorn of key performers such as England’s Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand a major disappointment no doubt for watching England coach Sven Goran Eriksson as well as Norway striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.New signings Kleberson, who went off in the second half clutching an injured arm, and Eric Djemba Djemba, who was also substituted, are still clearly trying to settle in. Ronaldo was also a fairly anonymous substitute. It meant that even Ruud van Nistelrooy finished a second consecutive game without a goal. Last season he managed 44.Ryan Giggs was United’s main inspiration and hit the crossbar in the 72nd minute when an offside flag would have made his effort irrelevant in any case. And just seconds later Howard seemed to cover himself in glory by tipping over Beattie’s close range header from a Fabrice Fernandes cross with a smart leap.United could have won it when Diego Forlan, who should have beaten Paul Jones just before half time from 15 yards, let fly from much further out only to see the Welsh ‘keeper turn the ball away at full stretch.Paul Telfer struck a fine half volley from 25 yards in only the second minute.Giggs struck a similar effort at the other end when found by Kleberson’s shot which deflected off Jason Dodd for a corner.Van Nistelrooy had his first sight of goal in the 24th minute but, having been set up on the left by Giggs, he produced a tame finish.Van Nistelrooy chased an over hit Forlan pass to the far side of the area and squeezed over a fine cross under pressure and Le Saux made the clearance with his head from almost under the crossbar. From the corner that followed Silvestre was left unmarked but failed to despatch his header from about 12 yards. Two minutes after that Saints boss Gordon Strachan decided to employ the drive of substitute Chris Marsden in place of Neil McCann.Phillips broke down the middle and the Saints looked certain to take the lead until Howard came off his line bravely and spread himself to block the shot which Phillips had to deliver under growing pressure from John O’Shea..
